A Model for Integrating the Publication and Preservation of Journal Articles Kevin S. Hawkins University of Michigan, Ann Arbor The library's role in acquiring and preserving content is in jeopardy in the era of the Internet: without special arrangements, a library has no legal right to make a copy of online publications. For scholarly journals, various business models have arisen to address this situation, including the right to preserve a copy (such as in SERU), LOCKSS, CLOCKSS, and Portico. One way to ensure that a library always has access to the latest content is if the library operates the very system used to publish the journal. The University of Michigan is building a system called mPach for publishing born-digital journal literature that is tightly integrated with HathiTrust, a shared preservation-quality digital repository. The U-M Library sees an opportunity to address the needs and values of both content creators and archivists while developing a shared infrastructure in support of low-cost, open university-based publishing. This talk will give an overview of the mPach system.
